CAFA Fun

In Manila for Claire’s December book launch, Nore fell in with the holiday spirit where she enjoyed some of the Metro’s exciting happenings; unfortunately, Didi was tasked to baby-sit the grandbabies in Singapore so he missed out on the Manila happenings this season. Over two days, Nore, Oni and Bili saw the Philippine version of the “Producers” show and enjoyed yet another Rocking 60s performance at Chef and Brewer.

The Producers show was a Broadway style presentation capably acted out by A. Gemora, Gi Teongi , and other Repertory Philippine stars. The show was also a fund raising event of sorts by the organizers for the Yolanda calamity victims. And guess who we bumped into at the theatre lobby – Baby and Bobby Bareiro! The couple is retired now from traditional jobs and is thinking of more exciting activities for themselves. Would you believe another career in entertainment production? Being connected with the television industry most of their lives, Baby and Bobby certainly have the credentials to make this new venture of theirs a success. Good luck, guys.

The Rocking 60s have survived their professional crisis period and are now set for heightened activities. The group mainstays led by Titus Santiago are front men Weng Erana and Dero Pedero. Then they acquired Cathy Castenada of the erstwhile Music Making Company. Together with Cash Manalang, the group are now capable of presenting an expanded repertoire (Cliff Richard and Petula Clark numbers as well as other classics i.e. Aquarius, Those Were the Days, etc).

Don't Forget the Soap

Last Friday, Dec 6, Claire had her book launch at the global city (the Fort). Despite the Friday Christmas traffic, the hall for the festivity was filled to the so-called hilt with well wishers. Based on the long queue who wanted their book copies autographed after the speeches, the book sale was clearly a success. (I saw them refilling the empty display stands). Personalities of the evening were Vicky Garchitorena (who was the guest speaker), former cabinet secretary Roberto Romulo and Citibank officials (Citibank co-sponsored the affair). I presume that the other sponsor was Lynn's new restaurant in QC which served the canapes for the event.

The CAFAs who graced the event were Cecille (Ascalon), Alice (Jose), Imelda and husband (Cajipe), Vic and Pearl (Ortega), Fiel (Zabat), Alex (Villaflor) and Oni and Bili (Mayo). Nore's good friends Botchi and Titus (Santiago) were there.  Nore's other friends (from her Holy Spirit school, Canada and  USA network) were also present at the affair. Of course, supportive son-in-law (Alex), dad (Didi), uncle (Francis), aunt (Lyn), nephews (Jonjon and Armin) and other relatives were present. It was unfortunate that other CAFAs got stuck in traffic or couldn't get any transportation at all and thus were not able to make it. (Cat Belo waited at her place from 1 to 4 PM for a taxi that never came).

Claire's speech during the opening ceremony was nationalistic, refreshing and informative that made us all proud -  and which just goes to prove how she is a chip of that old block.

Our Long Running 2013 Reunion Experience

By Cindy & Rudy Rivera

We finally ended our 2013 re-union with the CAFA and friends! Coming back to Chicago land seemed colder in temperature, and in our hearts. Eastcoast is truly beautiful! That "I Love NY" button is ever so true! you have the extreme urban feel, delightful country, and universal people!

Also fell in love with Connecticut's 'Americana look', the terrains, the cozy towns, the unpretentious white houses, ....and not to forget the GRINDERS!! Thank you Romy and Rory, and Romy's sis Rosy - for sharing your lovely home, and being soooo gracious in accommodating us.... also found out where Romy's sense of humor, quick thinking, and that peaceful calmness came from: "Mama Esther B., when I grow up, I want to be just like you".

Thank you Tong and Rita, and little Arthur, for such FUN company and part of "welcoming committee" in NY area.....surely wouldn't be as strong-a-bond without you. Little Arthur's "artwork" is now with my 'bookmark collections'! And, Eileen! you're so sweet to come join us whenever possible-- thank you for your lovely self! And not to forget that warm and beautiful cottage in Milford, Penn!! Hey! CAFA was certainly there!! Acoustic worked so good in that little ol' house when ya'll sang.... as when that Egypt song separated all your voices into harmony,

Howie's surprised look in his face (at hearing the Egypt song) is UNforgetable!! so, even tho the house was sold,- - -'been there, done that' for CAFA! A great memory was imprinted on those walls! Thanks Howie and Rody! such work and drama you guys put into your homes.

Thank you Nore and Didi, for the excitements, for winter-book-of readings! You're inspiring and so full of ideas!! - -but just your loss that you missed watching Billie go wild @ the apple orchard! Nope, she just won't take any other apple from anyone, but ONLY the ones she picked herself, ok?

And since we missed half of 'yous' in the Eastcoast, it's just not whole without that first half! A big fat hug of thanks to Gerry for his great leadership, and for offering the Milwaukee Philippine Center, and Jojo, for your loving works of art and hostessing, and for sharing your family and their participation!

And by the way, thanks to everyone's sincere gesture to compensate for our catering, but as Rudy have mentioned several times, 'It just wouldn't be SPECIAL if we accept payment - - It would be JUST another catering for JUST another group.' so, that evening, Jojo, Gerry, Rudy, and I have decided to donate, under the CAFA group name, half of the money to the good works of the Milwaukee Philippine Center, half to help educate underprivileged and battered women and children in the Philippines through the Ballesteros, whom we've come to know the works of the Good Shepherd Sisters, (if considering more contributions, go to http://www.goodshepherd.org/), and, the little bit of it went to compensate for the 3 great Help that Jojo and Gerry provided for us to clean and tidy up.

Thanks to very touching "moonlighting" works of Bess and Alice just to be with us here in the Midwest. Your strong part in every re-union is such a MUST. You're like the 'sinew' of the group! You ladies are amazing! Same with Dr. Elvis and your lovely wife, your 'last moments' decision to come is so appreciated for the whole package of memories! Loving my new gorgeous bright red hat- - nothing subtle from you Lina!

And, YESSS! Another keeper souvenir T-shirt to re-live all the fun each time we ware it - - so, we'll wear it often! Thanks for the 'eternal' reminder Ely, Arianne, and Enrique! Thanks also to everyone that came from the Philippines: Onie, Billie, Dinky, Milou, and Teena..... probably was the very core of inspiration that made this idea of re-union to 'come true'. Margaret and other out of town guests were proof of re-union's success, wanting to come on the next one...."wherever it may be"....

Well, everyone, thanks for the memories. Until the next memory making! ('driveable' please?). Keep us posted on that Philippine affair this Feb. 2014, YOU, re-union animals, YOU!! LIVE, LAUGH, and SING!

-XOXO from Rudy and Cindy.

Picking Connecticut

Last October 14, some East Coast-based CAFAs headed for Middletown, Connecticut. Tong and Rita with Baby Arthur (son of Ariel) drove from their home in Rockland. Oni and Bili took the Metro North train at Grand Central. Nore and Didi were suppose to join but didn’t make it due to an appointment with the contractor renovating their apartment.

The reason for the excursion? It’s fall in October and Romy invited the group to experience some apple picking activity in scenic Connecticut. Romy and Rory are temporarily based in Middletown to tend to Romy’s mom (Romy’s sister who did that work is currently on vacation). As we know, Rudy and Cindy are currently with Romy and Rory having driven together to the East Coast right after the CAFA’s Milwaukee reunion.

It was only a day trip for the visitors but with all the planned activities, it felt more than that. The group started with lunch (kaldereta, veggies and strawberry cake with coffee later) at the New England house of Romy’s sister. The professional fare was of course compliments of the house chefs Cindy and Rory.

From lunch, it was apple picking time at Middlefield, a nearby place with orchards. The gang enthusiastically ‘attacked’ the low-lying fruits even while the taller guys shared what they got from the higher branches. In a while, the plastic bags were getting ‘hay-vier and hay-vier’, so they say. From the orchard, the group headed for the village store that sold all kinds of organic rural produce. Tong found the premium “Honeycrest” apple that was not available for picking in the orchard and whereby he planned to pass it on to Ariel as those that he picked.

Spent from the afternoon activity, dinner was a welcome event. Romy and Rory knew the appetite of the CAFAs especially after the dinners at Milwaukee’s public market. And so what else could the main dinner fare be? Lobsters, no doubt! New England lobsters that’s larger and supposedly better than anywhere else in the US! After the filling dinner and more interesting conversation, the group broke up late in the evening. The fact that Bili and Oni arrived home (Manhattan) past 12 in the evening, tired but satisfied, says it all for the camaraderie that went on in Connecticut.

Milford, Pennsylvania

On a sunny Saturday in October, CAFAs in the East Coast proceeded to Pennsylvania upon the invitation of Rody and Howie. Rody and Howie own a vacation cottage in the Milford countryside which was interesting for the CAFAs to visit and experience. The two owners left earlier in the day to prepare for the arrival of the group. Didi, Nore, Bili and Oni traveled together from Manhattan. Tong and Rita came from Rockland. Romy, Rory, Rudy and Cindy drove from Connecticut.

The day consisted of a tour of quaint Middletown (the nearby village); chit chat (finally more time now to talk about the reunion absentees); and great food (adobo; fried chicken; relyenong bangus; fresh bread; and lime, blueberry and apple pies). The excursion culminated in CAFA singing of CAFA standards (to the captured audience) this time including Rody (who missed the Milwaukee reunion).

The 85 year old cottage is located in a rustic 1.5 acre rural setting. It is a refreshing hide away that displayed the deft interior touch of Rody. A large part of the backyard was fenced in (it specifically served as the weekend romping ground for a pet dog that recently died to the grief of Rody and Howie). Today, the cottage is on the verge of being sold. The CAFAs are lucky to visit it before that.

WACKY IN MILWAUKEE!

The CAFAs great reunion tradition continues. Starting from the get together at Hilton Head in 1995, the Milwaukee reunion is the fifth of a series for the CAFAs. At the week beginning of October - the start of scenic Fall - more than two dozen CAFA alumni and their relations congregated in the American Midwest city of Milwaukee.

The gallant host in Milwaukee was Gerry ‘Idol’ Ramos. (Many kilos ago, he may have been an idol). Gerry was not alone in the organizational effort.  He had help from CAFASingers in the area.  The guys without whose support the reunion would not be viable were Ely Tuason (from Plano) and Rudy Rivera (from Woodbridge). Gerry, Rudy and Ely certainly outdid themselves in making the affair worth it for the CAFAs.

Starting out with an Architectural river cruise of Chicago, the first day culminated with a big party at Gerry’s house in Milwaukee. (Yes, it was Gerry’s birthday celebration that was held in his back yard garden). The rest of the week included seafood lunch at Milwaukee’s rustic Public Market place (it was so good, that the group did it twice in the week).  From the Public Market, the CAFAs viewed the city’s industrial design exhibit (partly organized by Ryan, Gerry’s talented son).

Then there were:  outlet shopping; tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright Johnson building complex in Racine; tour of the Calatrava-designed city museum; an evening with Filipino food and band show (Pampanga Express Resto) in Waukegan; Golf for the Tiger Wood wannabe’s in Milwaukee; and finally the reunion’s grand event at the Philippine Community Center.

Gerry is proud of the Philippine Community Center building. He was mainly responsible for finding the site and overseeing the building reconstruction some years back. The facilities of the Center suited the requirement of the CAFAs final evening affair event. Being professional caterers, Rudy and Cindy took over the kitchen for that night. I did not have the opportunity to visit their Sebu Restaurant in Chicago when it was still operating, but now I know why it was so successful for many years. Efficiently, by themselves, Rudy and Cindy arrayed their silver-and-crystal like dinner setting and tasty dishes for the group to sample.

Guests to the event included the large Ramos family. The new faces were Gerry and Agnes Salvo who came all the way from neighboring Madison. (The week before the reunion, Bili and Oni were in Madison enjoying the hospitality of Gerry and Agnes. Agnes is Bili’s school chum from STC in Quezon City). Another special guest is Margaret Denk, the friend of Eileen. (Margaret is a retired TV producer who lives in Chicago.)  Not really guests, but noteworthy to mention are the young generation who came with their CAFA parents (Tina Einsiedel and Enrique Tuason).

The event had typical CAFA socializing. One joke from Dinky - Question: What do you call the female genitalia of a ghost? Answer: Spooky. As usual, they also talked about the 'dark' secrets of those who were unable to join the reunion.  For Cecile (recuperating in Iloilo), Alma (family obligations), Sarah (vacation schedule conflict), Ben (surprise na lang), Mina (jury duty), Sam (knee replacement), Emi (transferring houses), Hector (ill mother-in-law) and Tito (I'll see), we missed you guys. But in line with tradition, we talked about you. (Don't worry, your secrets are safe with us, but you realize that urban legend grows the more it is talked about.  Sam, your legend grows. heh heh)

The singing (Joey "Elvis", Rudy and Alice)and dancing (Didi and Lina) days before the grand event with the Pampango Resto band was a preview of things to come.  For the grand event, the group was really all primed up.  Providing the music were Gerry’s talented daughters (Camille and Carrissa), Alice and Bess, Gerry Salvo, Tong, Cindy and of course the CAFASingers. A surprise was the magic act of Gerry’s son-in-law, an aspiring magician. The night culminated with a raffle. The prizes were contributed by the CAFAs and included a Lenore Lim art work that Alice won. A raffle of sorts that everyone won was the Reunion Tee Shirt compliments of the generous Ely.

Summarily, it was an enjoyable full week for the CAFAs. Lest we forget, other people to thank are the better halves of the organizers, Jojo, Cindy and Ariane.  These ladies were seen mightily balancing the requirements of their homes while assisting their husbands in the reunion affair.  (As Tong said, the men attend to the policies, while the women implement.)  Another group to thank are the “Hassan’s” (car pool drivers) without whom the group would not be mobile. These guys were: Ely; Ariane; Didi; Rudy; Joey Abalos; Romy; Bess and Margaret.

Til the next CAFA reunion, hasta la vista, amigos y amigas. I understand that three places are in contention for the next reunion: the Philippines; Salt Lake City; and the East Coast. We should talk about that soon. This time please schedule your hip, knee and other replacements already so everyone can come to be counted! This call is especially directed to Fe, Alex, Pearl and Dero who have given no reasons not to attend.  Hala.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

Didi and Nore were leaving for the States the next day so a small dinner party with their neighborhood pals (in Ortigas) was held in Oni's house. It was Part 2 of the dinner held last time at the Grove (Nore's pad) since it was Titus and Botchi (Santiago) and Oni and Bili who were there again. Francis Raquel Santos joined the group this time.

The party was hastily put together and was not a prolonged one since Didi and Nore still had to finish their packing. Nevertheless, the interesting dinner topics were endless which augurs well for a Part 3 dinner when Didi and Nore comes back. I would say that the most hilarious stories were those about Didi's escapades (from US East Coast to Manila). If you will observe the attire of Titus and Botchi, during the party, that should give you an example of signature brand clothing.  Titus as you know is a garments buyer who goes to China several times a year. His description of kilometer long super warehouses in China is interesting to hear.
For sure, we will pick up on these stories come October in Milwaukee. Bon voyage to the globetrotters Didi and Nore.

CAFA Manila Happenings

The Didi & Nore Show

Last Sunday I got a call from Nore. She and Didi just arrived again from Singapore. The couple hosted a sudden dinner party at their pad in The Grove - that high-end condo in the Ortigas area.

Present at the party were two couples who live in the neighborhood - Titus and Botchi Santiago and Oni and Bili Mayo. Titus is of course the founder of the Rocking 60s band. The band is currently undergoing a reorg. Titus is working towards developing a new repertoire with new members. The way it's going, Oni teased Titus that the Rocking 60s may now be Rocking 70s.

The three couples couldn't get enough of chika. The hot topics ranged from intrigues within the Rocking 60s members, to political issues, to President PNoy's accomplishments. The group was so engrossed with the good food and conversation that the party lasted beyond m
idnight. I told Titus that this is the situation when CAFAs get together in reunions.

The Dionne Warwick Show

The legendary Dionne Warwick visited Manila for a one night show in Araneta Coliseum. Bili and Oni attended the show. DW was generally OK but was very sparing with her numbers. Anyway, her front act (Pavales?) made up for it with their great Motown sound. It took a while before Dionne could reach her high notes. Her short gray streaked haircut and the lines on her face caused one observer to ask whether it was Nelson Mandela on stage. heh heh. Nevertheless, the crowd loved her and sang out loud with her over strains of classics like San Jose, Alfie, You See This Guy, etc.

But the big deal of the night was one guy in the crowd. Yes, President Noynoy is apparently a fan and he came with some of his cabinet members. It was amazing to see PNoy hobnobbing with the masses after the show! You would think that he would be fully insulated and secured. Powerful syndicates are presently hurting due to PNoy's unrelenting campaign against corruption in Government.

Mabuhay - and Reunion na!

Carmen Prieto Exhibit

Last week, the NEOs re-emerged after a hiatus. They were asked to provide the intermission numbers for an art exhibit held in LRI Bldg. in Makati. The artist was Carmen Prieto, good friend of Alex Villaflor. If we look back, Carmen is also the mom of Tetris, erstwhile NEO member.

The art show was looking successful where guests were seen taking art works (purchased on the spot) off the walls to bring home. The NEOs did CAFA standards while the cocktails were being served in the hall. The NEOs who were there consisted of old reliables Dinky, Alex V, Hector and Oni.

Today, the NEO's standard numbers are however not so standard anymore. Yes virginia, the NEOs are back with a new arranger in Alex Salva. Alex S is a young music production major (graduate of University of St. Benilde) who not only arranges but who is a session artist and vocalist. The new arrangements were standardized (for the 4 men) hence, the new NEO music can now be live and even unplugged!

The NEO numbers in the exhibit were performed live with Alex S on keyboard and Oni on the guitar. It was refreshing to once again feel the energy of live accompaniment in performance. "Summer Song" was given a new acoustic take and the NEOs finally nailed down that pesky ending chord in "Cherish". "Man Come Into Egypt" really took off with keyboard basic and guitar accent backing. "Stasera" on the other hand became even more haunting with keyboard support.

After the intermission numbers in the gallery, the NEOs were not done. Later on in the art show, the NEOs proceeded to the Grafito Bar at the building ground floor were they did more numbers for some of the exhibit guests. The NEOs took the first set on stage while another group did the second set. Would you believe NEOs now adopting Beatles, Lettermen and Chad & Jeremy standards? With Alex S's help, the NEOs are now working on new material for better audience appeal and rapport.

If we can get Hector, Alex V and Alex S to come to Milwaukee in October, we will be in business, otherwise Dinky and I will have to do duets. heh heh.

Mar Bongalon, RIP

Mar Bongalon is a product of UP College of Architecture & Fine Arts (CAFA). He was a real talent and a tried-and-true CAFA of his time. Mar (or Bong) passed away Wednesday night and is currently lying in state at the St. Peter Memorial Chapels (Quezon Ave.).  Many friends and classmates came out in force to bid him a last goodbye. The Saturday Art Club of Alice, Lulu, Cynthia, Emi, Pearl, Cecille, Jess, Nic, Cat and available others made it a point to be at the wake this Thursday evening. It was a also a surprise reunion with the likes of Fiel Zabat, Nelson Rivera, Higgy Simpliciano and Adi Santos. Vic Ortega and Oni Mayo represented the Architecture branch of the CAFA College in the wake.

Mar succumbed to a stroke activated by the high heat in Manila today. We had not seen Mar for a while until this sad night. It seems that he has been spending time providing private art lessons. Among his clients is a ladies art group from Valle Verde 1 who came to the wake as well. These ladies who will now miss Bong’s tutelage are Grace Sanez, Naty Siongco, Myrna Halare, Evelyn Kilayko, Nitze Beltran, Viol Mendoza, and A Vigo. Maybe the Saturday art club people can now help the Valle Verde ladies continue to develop their talents.

As we know, Mar or Bong is single hence he is survived by his sister Estrella Cortez with whom he was staying with in the months leading to his demise. His nieces (Cristina and Zarah) and grandkids (of Estrella) were also there at the wake to greet visitors. In a light vein, Mar’s nieces said that Mar used to talked to them about his loves (although he never really introduced any of them to the family). But what else is new – Bong is a CAFA artist and definitely living life with a passion. This should be a familiar sentiment to CAFAs since most of them should somehow feel the same way about themselves - I think. What do you say, Jess?

Below are some articles about Bong by his friends:

Pearl Kapunan on the CAFA visit to the wake

hi friends,
after finally being able to trace where bong is , people were assigned to get in touch with former classmates.  .Saw Fiel already there with jess, nelson and higgy and the rest came, cynthia, emy , alice, lulu, and cat followed by his art students. Bong came later because his clothes arrived late. Onie also came ( sori, i missed your call and text but you came after all), Adi  and Pepe, lulu's husband. We prayed the rosary for the eternal repose of his soul.

What an ocassion to have a reunion but seing friends ( the boys ) which we have not seen for a long time emitted more  laughter from among us rather than tears.  With Jess around, what do you expect and as usual, puro photo ops.

We decided to pool resources  and pay St. Peters' services to help out with the expenses. Dra. Leung and i decided to meet the following day to settle the amount that has to be paid and i informed the decision of the group to the next of kin, his sister. The Fine Arts/arch group: Alice, Fiel,Emi, Cecile, Cynthia, Cat, Nelson, Higgy, Adi, Oni, my coz Methy Filler,  Jess , myself and Vic were able to raise 14,600.00. With the 10,000.00 raised by his students (one group only), we were able to pay the services, including request for death certificate, etc, transfer and burial permit,  the total amount of 25,210.00. The official receipt, i gave to the sister and i had it xeroxed for documentation purposes. To you all, thank you so very much, thank you for being there for a friend.

I remember bong and his totality, as someone who has contributed   to my questioning, accepting  appreciating the so many facets of personhood i met in the  Fine Arts.I can live with this now. May you rest in peace, Bong, may the angels bring you to the Eternal light and may you be filled with portraits to do in heaven, along  with the saints; may Mama Mary embrace you in her bossom and free you of all the pain you have endured while here on earth, no more grief or mourning or sadness  and loneliness but peace and joy  with the Holy Spirit forever !  Go... rest in peace now, and be with the Lord.

Emy Mercado on her memories of Bong

When Bong and I would paint together, he would share new techniques and discoveries with me. While his hands expertly moved from one space to the other, he would rattle off about light, balance, tints, shades, colors, patterns, movements, etc. On and on he went with his unsolicited art lessons. In between, he would throw his astral and universal philosophies. Peppered in his soliloquy are romantic encounters with his numerous "chicks". At the end, he would display a finished art work. Much to my utter amazement ..... is another masterpiece!  Yeah, that is Bong... there is no one like him... I will surely miss him.

Thanks to Cecille for advising the details of the wake early on and to Emy for many of the photos in the slide show below. Fiel and Cat, shall we see you at the October CAFA reunion in Milwaukee?

Nore's NY Art Show

By Tong and Rita Salgado

Nore is again back in NY. On April 9, 2013 she hosted the Printmaking Art Exhibit at the Philippine Center.

The etchings and lithographs that were exhibited are some of the artworks exhibited in Manila in 2010 and 2012,  That Manila exhibit was then timed with the printmaking workshops (at UP and the Cultural Center) sponsored by Lenore RSLim Foundation for the Arts.  Nore brought the said art materials with her for this NY show where those that will not be sold will be shipped back in Balikbayan boxes.

The guests of honor were the 3 master printmakers who went to the Philippines to do the workshops. The event was later graced by the attendance of Manuel "Mang Maning" Rodriguez, Sr. who came straight from the airport. Mang Maning, the Father of Contemporary Philippine Printmaking, is 101 years old and now resides in the Bahamas with his daughter.

CAFA friends In attendance are Rody Picar, Sam Santamaria, Tong and Rita Salgado (day off from apostolic work) and Bili Mayo (early time off from apostolic work), Oni Mayo was in NY but missed the show by a few days.  After posing with Mang Maning the CAFA group at the exhibit posed in front of their favorite artists' works.  Naturally these were those by Pearl, Emy and Nore. The reception offered delicious finger foods and generous servings of wine throughout the evening.

Successful!

Arch'l Digest NY Show

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the 2013 Architectural Digest Home Design Show. It was a 4-day affair held at Pier 94 on 12th Avenue. Somewhat like Manila’s annual WorldBEX building materials exhibit, the show featured interior design products as well as a series of professional talks under a forum called the “Master’s Studio”.

The furniture exhibit was OK but nothing really new. (I thought that our Manila furniture shows displayed the same products more or less.)  However, the interesting stuff for me turned out to be the arty interior decor products. The wall art section featured new display technology. Many ‘paintings’ had glistening front surfaces. (A process that binds together art sheet material  - fotograms, trad portraitures, etc - with flexiglass facing seems popular today). There were other 'surface' types.  Some drawings were actually composed over layers of glass that give ‘depth’ of vision in a real sense. For some reason, the etched stainless steel panel with  its stark and contemporary appearance was quite noticeable.

Then there were the faux chandeliers.  Consisting of Czech crystals strung along formed wire frames, the chandeliers had a kind of lightweight elegance to them. The frames with their different crystal types a-glistening surround the lighting fixture or even a mirror panel to convey art deco-like classicism in a low tech way. The strung crystals remind me of the business of a niece of mine.  She made bracelets, necklaces and other female accessories. (She was doing fine until she got married and settled down in California).

I thought that the new art products can be made by our own Pinoy talents readily. It is heavy in manual creative content which can be readily done by artists. How about it, Fine Arts Cafas? Insomniacs can be productive particularly for the crystal 'framing' items since this work can be done on the dining room table.  The framed chandelier I saw is priced at $12K ( several past models had been sold to hotels). The mirror frame is $7K and which took the artist 4 weeks to do.

The Masters’ Studio presentations were also revealing. One interior designer said that much like Doctors today, there are all kinds of specialists in an interior design team (would you believe a bookshelf stylist?). The talks on sustainable design was not really new - one award winning young architect admitted that it may take longer before sustainable design can catch on (at least in the NY upscale scene). There is an additional cost connected to Green Design which many clients still tend to reject. One of the presentors however gave a nice shot in the arm for prefabricated housing.  While his exteriors look like enlarged shipping containers, his interiors look very functional, spacious and even comparatively attractive as far as the layout of NY apartment goes.

This weekend Bili and I might see a Broadway show.  That will be another story.

See slide show for more photos.

The Caba Jaunt

by Pearl Ortega

On Friday,Feb 15, Vic and I took off at about 4:45 am from QC to connect with the rest of the CAFA in Rody's beach house in Caba, La Union, .It was a leisurely drive, but traffic was beginning to build up as we went further up North. You just have to have the Patience with the tricycles weaving in and out before you,my foot also applying the 'brakes' whenever they would cut us but we survived. Since it was early morning, Vic still had his sanity intact.

Rod was already texting us where we were, around 9am. Bought some boiled corn along the way since we presumed we would be there lunch time. Reached Caba and followed Rod's direction but still missed the road going down the beach. After a while, lo and behold, there it was, the West Philippine Sea, the former China Sea in all its shades and tints of blue and green. Lovely! Rod's place IS also a sight to see. A fusion of Philippine and contemporary design. I guess you have to see it yourself sometime.

Roberto was already there along with Tong and Rita. They arrived on the 14th, i think, Roberto 13th. So it was a trickle of guests arriving one after the other as we were expecting Alex, Nore, Didi and Emy to follow. Enjoyed the lunch prepared by Belen and her 2 sons, Reese and Christian.Syiempre, punong abala si Rody. Roberto left for Baguio after lunch, Alex arrived and i joined Belen in going to the wet market for our dinner. You wouldnt believe how inexpensive the oysters were, very very fresh, the choice cuts of Tanguigue(fish) which we got to grill and made to' kinilaw'. During dinner, it was decided that we will all go to Vigan the following day and in only one vehicle. Agreed time was 7 for breakfast, take off was 8am. We were all in the van by 9. After the repeatedly "are we there yet?" question for the nth time we finally arrived in Vigan in time for lunch. The guys were made to choose the menu and order.

While having lunch, we saw 2 funeral hearst complete with fully uniformed marching band each. One looked like cinderella's carriage with flowers pulled by 2 horses, the other one was metal tooled tin and glass so the coffin is visible from the outside, again, drawn by 2 horses. After lunch we entered the Vigan church, for first timers, we suggested that they pray and make 3 wishes. After that we proceeded to the "burnayan" or where the terracotta pots are shaped and formed, then fired.I presume this would be stoneware temperature level .We wanted to buy some but found them too pricey, instead,we walked through the famous Vigan road with the cobbled stones, wanting to see any bargains.I got a folding bamboo serving tray for only P400, a bigger one, tho the strap is leather in Tesoro's would fetch P3,500+.

There was another church we went to, with a gabled roof and near it , a very old belfry in bricks. Ang ganda! We made our 3 wishes, and lighted candles . We had dinner along the way back to Caba, a joint along the sea where there was live music. We requested for "our" songs but the singer and the piano player were clueless.( mag-request ba naman ng May each day.....). Alex boarded the bus for Manila for an early meeting the following day.

The guys took their bottle out while feasting on chicharon and talking, talking talking till about past 3 am. We said our goodbyes to Tong and Rita who were suppose to leave by 6am the following day. We woke up at 6am to bid them goodbye anyway. The next day, Sunday,Nore and Didi came but without Emy who was sick. Too bad. We all decided to go to mass : Rod,Didi,Nore,Vic and myself and went to the wet market afterwards . We saw another whole tanigue, got the choice cut again, bought arosep(seaweeds) for salad , and pork, to grill. There was bulalo for soup. After lunch, we needed to power nap that extended from 30mins to more than an hour.We watched the sun go down and it was such a marvelous sight!

Since Nore and Didi are not going stay overnite, Rod proposed that we go back to Mnla after an early dinner. By 7 pm, we were all ready to go, bidding our ever generous and gracious host goodbye, and planning for the next event.

It was around 12 am that Vic and i reached QC,and my son had to order pizza because his parents were hungry. However, it was no match to all the natural, bountiful harvest from the sea of La Union.

Thank you, Caba, for the wonderful experience, bonding with dear friends and partaking of your breathless scenery; thank you very much Rod for your generosity, for making sure that we were comfortable and ok, and most of all thank you Lord that all of us were well enough to savor these pleasures you have made for us to experience

' May each day.......'

The Grove Happening

by Emy Masigan Mercado

Thank you.... Tong, Rita, Oni, Bili, Didi, Nore, Rody, Vic, Pearl and Francis... for taking time to watch "Journey of a Hundred Years". I noted how your eyes were already popping off its eye sockets but still you were patient enough to watch the dvd. The commentaries were none-stop... Tong Salgado instigating sharp and witty remarks that sometimes I am compelled to say, "He is nothing without me"... of course not meaning it.

All in all, it was a fine rainy, balmy night... a perfect scenario for long-time friends to make more promises to see each other... more often this year than I have ever noticed... ....and to the formidable couple Tong and Rita, I wish you safe and comfy airplane ride back to the USA. I wish the same to Grandpa Oni and Grandma Bili as they eagerly look forward to many-a-hundred-days of baby sitting.

...and to Nore and Didi who seem to be forever wrapped in a tornado of happenings, thank you for the beauty of the Grove and the warmth of your hospitality.

...and to Vic... may I borrow Pearl your wife for some studio painting sessions, long overdue...

...and to Rody, I love your text, it hit me right in the core of my heart....

...and to Francis, I'll see you when I'll see you....

Editor's Note:
Last Thursday, a group of CAFAs held a despedida party for Tong and Rita. The venue was Nore and Didi's spanking new condo at the luxurious Grove - a Rockwell development in Pasig. As ever, Emy entertained everyone with her irrepressible style. Here below is Emy's narrative of what went on that evening. But before that, a backgrounder:
Nore and Emy were still fresh from their highly successful magnum opus - the College of the Holy Spirit Golden Jubilee celebration dinner-show. Nore (together with Vicky Garchitorena) was the Chair of the school's Jubilee night. Emy for her part was the prime mover and director of the night's musical - "Journey of a Hundred Years" (for the school). If we believe the Holy Spirit crowd who comprised the cast and audience of this entertaining show, they'll be talking about this musical for a hundred years!

This was the setting when Emy whipped out her DVD of the show held at SMX Mall of Asia. It was late in the day and Tong was posing to retire to prepare for his early morning golf. But Emy would have none of it. Everyone had to watch the show which was really a pleasant surprise. The show script was so professional. (Did you guys know that our Emy studied at the Yale Arts and Drama school in the 70s?) The CAFAs however drew the line when after the long Holy Spirit show movie, Pearl threatened to get her CD of her 40th Wedding event.

The party finally ended close to midnight. A memorable thing is the emergence of what should be one of CAFA's new catch phrase for 2013: "He is nothing without me! Nothing!" I guess you'll have to talk to the CAFAs present at the Grove to find out under which context this phrase was meant for.

Pearl in a whirl; more of Nore; coffee with Rody and Affair of Claire

40th Wedding Affair
Whew! The first 5 weeks of the beginning of the year was a whirl for CAFAs. First on the agenda was Pearl and Vic Ortega’s 40th year of marriage. The celebrants and their guests came bedecked in formal party attire for that special occasion (held in historical San Agustin Church in Intramuros). A rare face that came to the wedding is Ace Dimanlig – former CAFA classmate and notable Filipino landscape architect. Oni immediately asked Ace and his wife to consider October in Milwaukee should they travel this year.

The affair consisted of the traditional Filipino wedding program including a sumptuous dinner in the convent hall (beside the church). For this reception, the CAFASingers consisting of Dinky, Dero, Alex and Oni came to sing for Pearl, Vic and their guests. After several artists, the CAFAs got to sing their new song –“May Each Day” by Andy W. This song is the celebrants’ theme song.

Bay Leaf Dinner
A few weeks after the wedding, Pearl and Vic invited CAFA balikbayans (and locals) for dinner at Bay Leaf Hotel in Intramuros. The feast for the taste buds was great at the top floor resto but the feast for the eyes was just as good at the upper deck open air bar. The Manila City Hall, the Manila Central Post Office, Taft Avenue, the Harbors and the Pasig River was dramatically visible from the deck roof that night. On the deck, the CAFAs were pleasantly surprised to meet another CAFA classmate again; Rosary Benitez was with a group celebrating her aunt’s birthday. Except for a few gray hairs, Rosary looked the same - stately and dignified as ever.

Art Exhibit Show
The College of the Holy Spirit is also known for their Fine Arts course. Since it was the centennial year of the college, they decided to hold an art exhibit at the Cultural Center. And guess who are among the organizers (as well as exhibitors)? CAFA’s own Nore and Emy. Nore invited the CAFAs to the exhibit where they partook of the cocktail farre. The CAFAs who came were Dero, Rody, Tong and Rita, Vic and Pearl and Oni. Of course Nore, Didi, Francis and Emi, were there. Cynthia and Alice were also spotted hobnobbing with the high-powered guests at the Exhibit that night.

Visit to Manila Pad
Rody’s condo is a Locsin Building in Ermita (Marbella Bldg.). Lindy Locsin as the CAFA knows is a national artist and a design legend. Rody then put the Picar brand of interior on his unit which the CAFAs enjoyed after the Holy Spirit Art show at the Cultural Center. Ever the seasoned host, Rody had fruits, dessert treats and coffee for the gang. Helping him out was Belen and her family. Belen as we know is the Picar’s caretaker for their former Makati Pension House business. The predicatable Alex Villaflor is, well, predictably late. When everyone was already in Rody’s pad, Alex arrived at the Art Show which is now closed.

Ma. Isabel Baptism
Isabel is all of four months – the youngest addition to the Moore family. Claire and Alex came over from Singapore to have her baptized in the presence of family and friends last Sunday. The CAFAs naturally qualify under the latter category and where they occupied one big table in the party. CAFAs who came were Tong, Rita, Oni, Bili, Pearl, Vic, Emy, Cynthia and of course, Nore and Didi. Nore’s siblings are extended CAFAs (Lyn and Francis) who were at the CAFA table as well. The party place is located in the Timog area of QC. The place will eventually become a public eatery with a new concept that is still being formalized by the industrious Lyn. The resto is called Renato’s (after Rene) and comes complete with function rooms for business meetings and other cozy gatherings.

Busy January

Following the Christmas season, American CAFAs (i.e. Nore, Didi, Rody, Tong, Rita and Emy) are seen in town today. Bili herself just arrived from the US. She is taking a break from her required apostolic duties. Considering the amount of time she spends there (3 months out of the last 5 months), Bili is beginning to qualify as a Balikbayan!

Last Sunday, a little party was held in Oni and Bili’s house in Greenmeadows. It was mainly a bienvenida for Bili. Bili had been out for so long that her Villavicencio family was missing her. Another reason was her family’s eagerness to see her first ‘apo’ (son of Lia) for the first time. Sunday being the eve of Oni’s birthday as well, the CAFA balikbayans together with locals Dinky, Milou, Pearl, Vic, Cecille, Dero and Alex also came.

The main objective of the CAFA get together was to plot out the forthcoming activities of the CAFAs while the balikbayans are in town. Thus, a dinner at Intramuros; an art exhibit opening at the Cultural Center; the baptism of Nore’s apo at Timog; and the excursion to Dagupan and Pangasinan were lined up as the activities for the month of February.

The Sunday affair was a laughter-filled evening for the CAFAs. Some of the CAFAs brought food and drink as their contribution to the party (bibingka, ice drop, buko pandan, wine, etc.). But since they didn’t know that there would be other guests, there wasn’t enough quantity for all. The problem was solved when the CAFAs were made to assemble in the Dining Room (the other guests were in the yard) while Oni instructed the waiter to discretely serve the CAFA goodies only to the CAFAs!

Dinky noted that due to the large and spirited CAFA assembly, this Sunday get-together qualifies as a CAFA mini reunion. Since there were other visitors that day, the CAFAs got to sing for them as well. A couple of songs (Cherish and Up and Away) were finely delivered but surely, the latter songs (‘If I Fell’ and ‘Man Come Into Egypt’) were renditions that can only be termed as Alzheimer-style singing. Despite the lack of practice that led to performance miscue, the CAFASingers continue to impress with their Dero- inspired harmony style especially for guests who have never heard the CAFAs.

Oni’s note:
In ending, I apologize on missing out on inviting other CAFAs to this sudden affair (Bili just arrive Friday midnight when the Sunday party was formalized). And through all my efforts to forget my age, thanks anyway to everyone who had greeted me (reminded?) a Happy Birthday on the Email. Basta CAFA, I’ll take it from them. Heh heh.
